Partial Hospitalization Program for Adolescents

Partial Hospitalization Program for Adolescents

A Partial Hospitalization Program, also known as PHP, is a behavioral health program which treats mental health and substance abuse issues in an outpatient setting. In partial hospitalization, the patient continues to reside at home and typically attends PHP for several hours per day, Monday through Friday. The PHP at CenterPointe of Rolla makes it possible for adolescents to attend school during the day and participate in PHP in the evening.

Partial hospitalization focuses on the overall treatment of the individual and can be part of a continuum of care after inpatient hospitalization or residential treatment (a step down in care), or as a more structured option to traditional outpatient therapy (a step up in care).

PHP is available for the treatment of depression, anxiety disorders, trauma, mood disorders, thought disorders, and other mental illnesses, as well as alcohol and drug use.

PHP increases each adolescent’s understanding of their illness, teaches important life skills and helps adolescents manage everyday challenges that arise at school, relationships and family.

Treatment methods provided by PHP typically include the following services:

  • A diagnostic interview, physical, and assessment when first entering the PHP
  • Development of a treatment and recovery plan based on individual needs and goals
  • Psychopharmacological assessment
  • Medication management
  • On-site nursing services
  • Group therapy
  • Self-assessment
  • Emotion regulation
  • Coping, communication, problem solving and life skills groups
  • Safety plan
  • Recreational activities
  • Development of a continuing care or discharge plan for after PHP is completed
  • Therapy services are provided by licensed therapists and medical staff

Group therapy is one of the foundational elements of PHP treatment. PHP offers multiple group therapy sessions each day. Led by a therapist, or other appropriate professional, group therapy facilitates discussion on treatment and gives group members the opportunity to share insights from their own personal journeys and to encourage other members who are facing similar challenges. Group therapy serves as a safe and structured environment for adolescents to practice productive interpersonal communication and other skills that are essential to recovery.

PHP for adolescents is an excellent way to receive additional help in the following skills:

  • Anger Management
  • Healthy Relationships
  • Positive Communication
  • Healthy Decision Making
  • Positive Coping Strengths
  • Transitioning Back to School
  • Managing Depression and Anxiety
  • Improving Organization and Life Skills

Many adolescents who struggle with mental health and/or substance use disorders can benefit from the incorporation of certain prescription psychotropic medications into their treatment plans. When a PHP participant has been prescribed medication, they may meet with one of our psychiatrists or nursing staff for medication management services.

Some adolescents suffer from both mental health and substance use issues. PHP offers dual diagnosis treatment for co-occurring mental disorders. Dual diagnosis treatment works to heal both disorders at once so a adolescent can recover completely.
